Email: info @ athenaeumhotel.com We're
the largest family-owned and run hotel group in the UK. We have a
commitment to friendly, personal service and a resistance to
overbearing, corporate direction. Our other hotels, the five-star Grove
in Chandler's Cross, Hertfordshire, the four-star Runnymede on the
Thames near Windsor, and Greengarden House, our serviced apartments off
Oxford Street, are one-offs, not me-too outposts of a faceless chain.
The Athenaeum Hotel & Apartments,
subject of a £10 million
refurbishment in 1994, was originally built in 1925 and the Edwardian
era respectively. Run on the lines of a private club, it was rebuilt as
a luxury apartment block in the 1930s - a time when no building close
to Buckingham Palace could be more than 100 feet high. Known as the
Athenaeum Court, it was furnished by Trollope & Co. of Belgravia, the
company later commissioned to fit out the Queen Mary for its maiden
transatlantic service.
The building became an airline crew
hostel during the war, and was
eventually bought by the Rank Organisation in 1971 who spent two years
gutting and refurbishing the building. Re-opened as the Athenaeum Hotel
& Apartments in 1973, it was purchased from Rank by Ralph Trustees Ltd
in September 1992.
Over the years, the Athenaeum Hotel &
Apartments has been a London home
to scores of luminaries in the world of show business, music and
literature, as well as other discerning travellers seeking a discreet,
hospitable and superbly located West End address.
Famous names to give the Athenaeum star
billing include Harrison Ford,
Stephen Spielberg, Warren Beatty, Shirley Maclaine, Lisa Minelli, Liz
Taylor, Marlon Brando, Lauren Bacall, Charlton Heston, Olivia Newton-
John, Victoria Principal, Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers, not to
mention sisters Joan and Jackie Collins. Recent guests have included
Magic Johnson, Rob Lowe, Sandra Bullock, Michael York, Dennis Thatcher,
Charles Dance and Richard Dreyfuss.
Our 111 rooms and 12 suites are not
clones of each other. Not for us
the bland uniformity of hotel-chain bedrooms. Some veer towards the
traditional, others are more contemporary. A blend of English elegance
with 21st century technology.
The well-appointed marble bathrooms have
high-pressure showers and
luxurious bathrobes. Many rooms have a stunning view over Piccadilly
towards the tree-tops of Green Park, Westminster and beyond, creating a
feeling of tranquillity in the heart of London.
Facilities include In room entertainment
system encompassing digital TV
and radio, Broadband internet access, pay per view movies, CD and DVD

apartments occupy a row of Edwardian townhouses connected to the hotel.
Each apartment has been individually
decorated and designed with one-
off antiques and artistic touches. The 34 apartments also come with a
useful extra - the five star facilities of the Athenaeum hotel. These
include Bullochs restaurant, 24-hour room service, laundry, valet and
maid service and use of the hotel spa. We wouldn't blame you if your
oven, washing machine and iron remain unused.

for private meetings.

with video entry phone and
each apartment has a compact kitchen with cooking facilities, a
washer/dryer, iron and ironing board.

You're desperate to get a table in the
hippest restaurant? Talk to
Alex, Donald or Duncan, our Concierge team.
Between them, they've been with us for 65
years and are established as
pre-eminent experts on London life. (As loyal staff-members, they rival
Nancy in Housekeeping, who's been making our beds for 30 years).
They're particularly popular with the hotel's many celebrity guests,
who regularly return to their favourite London hotel. As they say
"Well-known people feel at home here - they can come and go discreetly,
with none of the fuss and bother of a big hotel." Challenge our
Concierges with urgent, impossible questions and you'll appreciate how
they've raised the benchmark of Concierge service. They regularly
unlock the doors of London's best kept secrets.
English breakfasts. Scottish whiskies.
'Modern British' lunches and
dinners.
Our restaurant, bar and lounge fend off
friendly competition from the
Athenaeum's impeccable 24-hour room service by creating their own
distinct and welcoming ambiance.
Take the steps down from the lobby and
you'll enter a clean crisp
sanctuary of glass and chrome. Our spa, open exclusively to Athenaeum
guests, is a blissful antidote to the stresses and strains of Central
London. You can take a warm relaxing dip in the jacuzzi, unwind in the
sauna and steam room or workout in the gym. A personal trainer can be
booked to give one-to-one training, using our advanced Technogym
equipment. All of these facilities are available 24 hours.
Perhaps golf is your preferred
relaxation? If so, ask our Concierge
about a 40 minute car or train transfer to The Grove, our sister hotel.
The Grove's championship course, designed by Kyle Phillips, is
available to Athenaeum guests. You can hire clubs from the club house. |
